Todd sent me an article for the T Nation site and I forwarded it to my assistant editor with the simple but mysterious note, “BBB.” He wrote back and asked me, “What’s BBB standfor?” “Simple,” I replied, “Bumgardner Be Badass.” That’s all he needed to know.
“On a recent trip to the US I was lucky enough to spend time with a number of the leading coaches in the fitness industry. Todd was one of the standouts. Within a few minutes of talking I realised not only was he an extremely knowledgable guy, but also a great coach who knew how to transfer his knowledge to real life results for his clients. I hope they realise how lucky they are to be receiving his coaching.”

“What can I say about my good friend Todd? The dude is ALL heart! He is a great coach who really cares about all of his athletes. His has drive, determination and that ‘always a student’ mindset that sets him apart from others in the industry. He is driven to learn the latest information around athletic development and it really shows in the results he gets with his programs. That is why I regularly consult with him when I need a new perspective or when I need his advice”.

“I have known Todd since high school. He was and still is a goal oriented person with an immense amount of determination and will to succeed. He combined these traits with his expertise in the field of strength and conditioning and personal training to develop one of the best training programs I’ve ever done.”

“I’ve worked with young guys to elderly groundbreakers; and I’ve always found one thing… All too often a “coach” has one facet of training nailed down, but lacks in all of the others. This is what has kept me coming back to Todd. His knowledge continues on past the typical parameters that other coaches have made for themselves and touches all facets of my training needs.”
“A lot of us probably read about and research working out as much as we actually work. At least that is the case for me. Earlier this year I came across an article in T-Nation that really seemed to speak to me directly. It was by Todd Bumgardner and I could tell he knew his stuff. I had recently started a dedicated weight lifting program. This was my first experience with a fulltime program, not just dinking around aimlessly without any real goals. However, I was also deeply committed to a lot of well established workout habits that contradicted any hope of getting stronger. That’s where I needed a coach like Todd.
I wrote to him after reading his article. I knew I was going to need some help if I wanted this program to work as intended. Even though we wound up being across the country from each other — I’m in Seattle and he’s as east of eden as it gets — he responded immediately. Luckily he was tech savvy and after a good bit of email, phone and internet chat, we developed a plan. We share an online spreadsheet of my daily workout. I write out what I have planned and he comments. He is always available, accessible, encouraging and above all committed. I’m thousands of miles away, we’ve never met in person, yet he probably knows more about my sport psychology/pathologies than my mom. His experience with his own training demons and his other clients have helped me understand where I need to focus my efforts if i want to see real change.
So keep doing what you’re doing if you think it’s working for you. Otherwise, you’re going to need to accept a little (or a lot of) change for the better, seek some professional advice and trust it.”
“Once I decided I wanted to do my firstgeared powerlifting meet I began searching the internet for meet preptraining schedules. I had no idea how to implement gear into training, nor did I have anyone locally that could really help mewith schedule. I was completely lost, but I was lucky enough to haveTodd offer a hand.
The first week Todd immediately identified my weaknesses and began to address them. He scheduled mefor 7 weeks of “raw” training to prepare my mind and body for thegear. During that 7 weeks he had me doing a ton of mobility work, which was something I was truly lacking and it was holding me back. Mainly because I didn’t know how to address mobility, but with Todd’s help I was soon able to open my hips wider and with the upper back mobility I no longer had shoulder pain while benching.
After the weeks of “raw” training he slowly eased me into the gear, and since the gear was new he helped me break it in properly. Along the way he also opened my eyes up to many new training moves. I felt like I knew most of the supplemental exercises surrounding powerlifting, but Todd proved that I was wrong. With a ton of variation, proper deloading, addressing of my weaknesses, and the knowledge provided on making intelligent weekly training goals I was getting better week to week with both strength and speed development.
By the end of the meet cycle I had achieved many PR’s in training along the way. I couldn’t be happier that I was lucky enough to have such a knowledgeable trainer/mentor such as Todd help me achieve every one of my goals for the meet.”
“Working with Todd really has been a treat. Not only is he so much more knowledgeable than anyone I’ve ever worked with before, but he took the time to make sure I understood all the movements in my program before I started. All the focus on proper form and mobility in the beginning definitely set me up for the huge gains in strength that I had throughout the program. What I liked best about working with Todd was that he connected everything that I was doing in my training to playing rugby. Our fall season hasn’t started yet but I’m very excited to see how everything that I’ve been doing pays off on the field!”
